Africa's Ancient Rainforest

One Million Years of Living Forest

Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests β€” scientists estimate it has been continuously forested for over one million years. Covering 1,019 kmΒ² of southwestern Rwanda, it is home to 13 primate species, over 300 bird species, 1,050+ plant species and thousands of insects found nowhere else on earth.

The crown jewel of Nyungwe is the canopy walkway β€” suspended 70 metres above the forest floor, stretching 200 metres through the treetops. Our expert guides lead you through chimp tracking, waterfall hikes, birding walks, and this extraordinary aerial experience.

Suspended 70 metres above the ancient forest with colobus monkeys leaping past me at eye level. I was completely speechless. Manoir arranged everything seamlessly.

The chimpanzee tracking was different from anything I'd experienced. Faster, louder and more dramatic than gorillas. Our guide tracked them through the forest like a pro. Magical.

As a birder I was blown away. 47 new species in one day including the African green broadbill β€” a life tick. The specialist guide knew every call in the forest. This is Africa's best birding.

Common Questions

Nyungwe Forest FAQ

Is the canopy walk scary?
+
The bridge sways gently but is completely safe β€” it is regularly inspected and built to international safety standards. Most visitors find it more exhilarating than frightening. The views from 70 metres are extraordinary. Those with severe vertigo may want to consider the forest trail instead.
How fit do you need to be?
+
The canopy walk trail involves a 45-minute moderately uphill hike through the forest to reach the bridge. Reasonable fitness is needed but no specialist hiking experience is required. Chimp tracking can cover more ground more quickly β€” moderate fitness recommended. Our guides set a comfortable pace for all groups.
How far is Nyungwe from Kigali?
+
Approximately 225 km β€” about 4 hours by road through spectacular mountain scenery, terraced farmland, and tea plantations. Manoir provides comfortable 4WD transport. We recommend an overnight stay at Nyungwe House to make the most of the experience and enjoy a second activity the following morning.
What is the best time to visit for chimpanzees?
+
Chimpanzee tracking is excellent year-round, but October–November (short rains) is especially good as the forest is lush and chimps are very active feeding on fruit. The short rains also mean fewer tourists and lower prices. June–September (dry season) is also popular and the trails are easier to navigate.
